BU Achievements
Student ExperienceOur commitment to excellence in higher education means that we remain focused on ensuring the quality of the BU experience for all of our students. We continue to invest in key people and resources to provide new and improved ways of learning, assessment and feedback. Technology plays an important role in our capability to stay at the leading edge of innovation in higher education. One of the most notable developments is our new and effective virtual learning environment, myBU, which is used in many imaginative ways to enhance learning. Computer-based personal development planning is another feature of the BU student experience and the increased use of podcasting and other multi-media tools provides a contemporary learning environment for all. BU has the UK’s most 'Outstanding Library Team' - winning this year’s inaugural Times Higher Education Leadership and Management Award which recognises the team’s dedication and achievement in providing a high quality of service in support of all areas of University activity. Our Graduate Employment Service (GES) provides professional support to assist students and graduates in finding employment and our unique Centre for Global Perspectives leads several initiatives to develop the global outlook of both students and staff. We have enhanced prospective and current student experiences through the establishment of askBU, our centralised enquiry and information service. BU was one of the first UK Universities selected to pilot Peer Assisted Learning for first-year students and is now regarded within UK Higher Education as a model of 'best practice' in the sector. We have completed the construction and development of a new Executive Business Centre which will be opened formally by our Chancellor designate, Lord Phillips, ready for the new intake of postgraduate students in September 2009. We have installed the only High Definition media studio in the UK Higher Education sector which matches or even exceeds the same facilities used by the BBC, Sky and other professional broadcast organisations With over 25 years of industry experience, we have been designated the UK's only Centre for Excellence in Media Practice. This government award of £4 million over five years recognises our commitment to innovation and excellence in learning and education. In partnership with the Arts University College at Bournemouth, the Media School has been designated a Screen and Media Academy, one of only two in the UK to enjoy this status for both screen (for creative film) and media (for TV and interactive media). Skillset is the sector skills council for the audio visual industries in the UK. We have provided over 1,300 beds in new student accommodation, with more to come. Our first development in the centre of Poole, Corfe House, features a millionaire’s view of Poole Harbour and Lyme Regis house, our new accommodation block adjacent to the Executive Business Centre near the centre of Bournemouth, will open formally in September 2009. |
