Autumn in Bournemouth

Context and Profile

Bournemouth achieved University status in 1992 but can trace its roots to the early part of the 20th century with the foundation of the former Bournemouth Municipal College.Today the University’s income approaches £100 million per annum, with a contribution to the local economy of approximately £240 million.

Graduate Employment Success

The most recent Destination of Leavers from Higher Education Survey revealed that, six months on from completing their degrees in 2004/5, the employment rate for BU graduates was 88%, against a national average of 79% (Higher Education Statistics Agency).

League Table Performance

The 2006 Times Good University Guide places BU at 69th out of 99 UK higher education institutions listed. That placing marks a rise of 15 from the 2005 guide, representing the greatest improvement of any English university.

Resounding Endorsement from Head Teachers

BU performed exceptionally well in a recent survey of over 1,000 UK head teachers who were asked to identify universities that provided the highest quality undergraduate provision across 30 subject areas.

The survey, published as part of the 2005 Sunday Times University Guide, named BU the best in the country for media and tourism, making Bournemouth the only university outside London to top two subject tables.

Academic Excellence with an International Reputation

BU is one of Europe’s largest study centres for media, with the only government-supported Centre for Excellence in Media Practice in the UK. BU students and graduates have worked on films such as Gladiator, The Perfect Storm, The Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, Madagascar, and King Kong.

Sharing Expertise within Europe and Beyond

BU has pioneered training programmes for countries wishing to join the EU via our experts in the Centre for Intellectual Property Policy and Management. We are also a world leader in forensic archaeology and crime scene science, having spearheaded major projects in Bosnia, Rwanda and Iraq.

Positive Regional Impact

Last year BU trained over 5,000 health and social care staff in the South West and we enjoy the highest category of confidence in our NHS-funded provision.
