Recent Research Achievements

In a very short time, Bournemouth University has developed a strong reputation for its wide range of recognised areas of academic excellence, inspired by an entrepreneurial spirit and dedicated to the professional development of its students, graduates and staff.

BU’s School of Conservation Sciences has been awarded a £1.2 million (1.72 million Euro) research grant from the European Commission’s INCO-DEV programme to lead a major international study on the restoration of forest landscapes for biodiversity conservation and rural development in Latin America.

Professor John Fletcher of the International Centre for Tourism and Hospitality Research prepared a major study on behalf of the South West of England Regional Development Agency on the potential impact of the 2012 Olympics on the wider region.

Members of the Centre for Land-Based Studies have embarked on a major EU project to develop a Tourism and Heritage Training and Research Centre with the Ministry of Sport and Tourism in Turkmenistan.

‘Prisoner Diet and Exercise’ came under the scrutiny of Professor John Edwards and colleagues from the Centre for Foodservice Research in a report commissioned by the National Audit Office.

Researchers in the National Centre for Computer Animation have created a new computerised system to bring more realistic movement to animated characters.The development, led by Professor Jian Zhang and his colleague Dr Xiaosong Yang, is seen as a major breakthrough for the entertainment industry and allows animators to ‘flesh out’ characters based on their outward appearance rather than take the more conventional route of working from the inside out.

Professor Tim Darvill, one of the world’s leading authorities on Stonehenge, co-ordinated the research framework for the world heritage site on behalf of English Heritage. The framework will underpin the longterm management and presentation of the monument and its surroundings.

Professor Dawn Freshwater and her colleagues in the Institute of Health and Community Studies developed a training package on behalf of the Department of Health to address mental health awareness for wing-based prison officers in order for them to take on the new role of mental health liaison officer.
