The University Board
The Board oversees the strategic development of the University and ensures the effective use of resources and the general solvency of the institution.
The Board comprises members from within higher education, industry and commerce as well as representatives of the students and staff (both academic and non-academic). The Vice-Chancellor and the other members of the University Executive Group are Board Members.

| Sue Sutherland OBE (Chair) |
|
Until her retirement in March 2010, Sue was Chief Executive of Poole Hospital Trust and former Chief Executive of the UK Transplant Special Health Authority.
She initially trained as a nurse, then midwife. Prior to becoming a Chief Executive Sue held a number of Executive Director posts including Director of Nursing, Director of Human Resources and Director of Operations.
Sue is also a Trustee of Hospiscare, a Devon based charity providing end of life care to patients and a member of the Remuneration and Finance and Resources Committees.

| Chris Appleton |
A member of the Audit, Risk & Governance and Remuneration Committees, Chris has experience of finance, governance and the University Sector.
He is currently Senior Director with Smith & Williamson, Southampton and Chairman of Nexia Smith & Williamson Audit Ltd.
Chris is a Trustee and Director of the Navigators Limited, a small charity incorporated in the UK.
Previously Chris was a Partner with Coopers & Lybrand were he was responsible for the audits of a number of Higher Education Institutions.
He is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountant for England and Wales and Member of the Audit Faculty and Corporate Finance Faculty. |

Dr Peter Barnwell MBE |
|
Peter Barnwell sits on the Finance and Resources Committee and chairs the Board's Enterprise & Commercialisation Task Group.
Peter has enjoyed a varied career in the electronics, academic and venture capital worlds, including working in the USA for several years.
Peter is the Founder and Chairman of Custom Interconnect Ltd., a UK based electronics manufacturing company.

Ian Carter |
|
Ian Carter has been the Headmaster of Poole Grammar School since 2004. Under his leadership the School was designated a specialist Maths and Computing College and he continues to oversee projects to expand the school and introduce an innovative curriculum.
Prior to this Ian was Senior Deputy Head of The Perse School, Cambridge and he has many years of wide-ranging experience in education, as a teacher, examiner, Director, governor and parent governor.
Ian is a Trustee of Broadstone Methodist Church.
Ian's professional memberships include The Institute of Biology, HMC Southern Division and he was a founding member of the Grammar School Head's Association. He is a member of the Student Experience Committee and Finance & Resources Committee.

| Joanna Dawson |
Joanna Dawson is currently the Chief Executive Officer of Car Crash Line Group Ltd. Joanna has over 10 years Board level experience in business, covering a variety of roles including Human Resources, Operations and Departmental management.
Joanna is also Governor at Moyle's Court School. She is a member of the Student Experience Committee and Finance & Resources Committee. |

| Julian Francis |
Julian Francis is the Chair of the Finance & Resources Committee and a member of the Research Ethics Committee.
Julian Francis was a partner in Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, one of the world's largest law firms, from 1987 to 2008 specialising in international M&A deals. He also headed up the Risk Management function from 2002 to 2008.
Julian is an Honorary Fellow of the Royal British Society of Sculptors. Julian is also a Trustee of the Roche Court Educational Trust, a charity providing art education for children and young adults. |

| Professor Christine Hallett |
Professor Christine Hallett was the Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Stirling until her retirement in April 2010.
Professor Hallett was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 2002. She is Chair of the Board of Trustees of UKCISA (the Council for International Student Affairs) and a member of the Board of Trustees of NatCen (National Centre for Social Research). She was appointed as a Civil Service Commissioner in 2008. She is a member of The Audit, Risk & Governance Committee, Remuneration Committee and Enterprise & Commercialisation Task Group. |

David Hines |
|
David Hines is Chief Executive of the Quantum group, south coast based land and property fund managers across the residential, commercial and care sectors. David has 30 years of property and business experience and is a Member of the Chartered Institute of Marketing.
He is a member of the Finance & Resources Committee.

Tim Lee (Deputy Chair) |

A physicist by background, Tim Lee spent over 30 years with an international IT company, culminating in director appointments in Marketing and Customer Services. He now advises organisations on partnership strategies and edits the CBI/BIS annual publication The Partner.

| Dr Peter Rawlinson |
Peter currently sits on the Boards of a number of organisations in the Education, Health and Charity sectors.
Peter has 30 years of broadly based general management experience in the Information Technology & Telecommunications Industry.
He has developed and launched new products and business ventures for a number of blue-chip organisations and has a wide range of overseas experience.
Peter was awarded a PhD in New Product Management by the University of Aston and is also a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and a Fellow of the Institution of Engineering & Technology.
Peter is also Trustee of The Stroke Association. He is a member of the Audit, Risk & Governance Committee. |

| Roy Spragg |
Roy Spragg is a Fellow of the Faculty of Actuaries with over 20 years of experience at Board and Executive level as Finance Director with significant companies in the Financial Services Sector. He is Chair of Remuneration Committee and Deputy Chair of the Audit, Risk & Governance Committee.
