My research interests focus on understanding how plant interactions with their pollinators and herbivores affect both the current distribution of species and the likely success of efforts to restore or create habitats. Within the UK, I lead collaborative research projects with the Royal Society for Protection of Birds, the National Trust and the MoD that investigate the ecological impacts of Sika deer and factors affecting the success of heathland restoration techniques.
Current conservation research projects overseas are identifying conditions required for the successful pollination of rare orchids and species of Araceae that have evolved elaborate trap pollination systems. Collaborating institutions include the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, the Max Plank Institute and the Instituto Pirenaico de Ecología. I am also investigating the effect of alpine marmots on montane plant communities and collaborating with an Ecuador-based conservation organisation ?Primenet? to develop methods of assessing the relationship between habitat quality and the abundance of cloud-forest mammals. I am always keen to enable students to actively engage with research and am currently helping a group of our undergraduate students organise an expedition to Ecuador this summer where we will be carrying out a Royal Geographical Society supported survey of Andean mammals and their habitats.
