Profile

My research has focused on a number of areas related to clinical psychology. Several of my published papers relate to the perception of sleep satisfaction in depression. Much of the previous work on the relationship between sleep and depression has explored objective measures, such as sleep length and REM sleep; little has examined what depressed people actually feel about sleep. My research has shown that the evaluation of sleep is more negative for depressed patients than it is for healthy controls, even when there is no difference in the amount of sleep disturbance between those groups. Some of my research has involved supervising doctoral theses that examine the effect of postnatal depression and psychosis on the relationship between the mother and child. Other projects have included an exploration of the experience of student stress and the use of complementary medication (such as St John’s wort) for mild depression. My teaching expertise has been directed at statistics. I have gained the reputation of coaching even the most fearful students to overcome their dread of statistical procedures. I have written a book on statistical methods in psychology, which is due to be published at the end of 2010.
