Profile
I have been conducting research into the psychological aspects of technology since 1990 and completed my PhD, ‘A Social Psychological Analysis of Computer-Mediated Communication’, in 1995. My research covers online communication and collaborative working, social identity theory, psychological research using the Internet, social networks and e-learning. In 1998, with Dr Linda Hole I founded the Human-Computer Systems Research Group and I’m now Co-Director. I am currently supervising three PhD students.
I teach predominantly on the BSc Psychology & Computing degree, for which I have been Projects Tutor and Course Tutor. I have gained a number of awards / grants in the area of teaching: 2000-2001 - EU (Leonardo da Vinci) Grant for research on 'Trans-national Evaluation of Open and Distance Learning Practices Across Rural Areas’ 2001-2002 - BU Learning & Teaching Development Fund to evaluate the use of electronic lectures 2002-2003 - BU Learning & Teaching Fellowship for ‘using electronic seminars to assist the development of critical thinking, group communication and reflection skills in students’. 2003-2004 - BPS ‘public engagement’ funding to take psychology to school pupils studying computing.
