Profile
Generally speaking, my research looks at the way a person's environment might affect them, from the more obvious psychoperceptual aspects to more subtle physical stimuli. My previous research has looked specifically at behavioural and physiological responses to weak magnetic fields (from both natural and artificial sources), especially in relation to affective interpretations (i.e., does exposure to the fields result in an emotional experience) and to parapsychological experiences (e.g., extrasensory perception, interpretation of somewhere as being “haunted”).
My current focus has widened to a more ecological perspective of environmental effects, trying to understand what environmental factors (both physical and psychological) may be beneficial or detrimental to mental health. Two specific areas of interest are (i) cognitive models linking responses to local environment to mental states/health, and (ii) factors that promote a feeling of connection to the natural world (one of the primary predictors of “green” behaviours).
I have expertise in psychophysiology (skin conductance, photoplethysomography and electroencephalography), environmental psychology (especially ecopsychology), hypnosis and parapsychology.
