Area(s) of Interest
ProfileMy research focuses primarily on autistic spectrum disorders (ASDs) in two broad areas: Pretence I have investigated the development of pretence in children with autism and empirically tested the links between lack of pretence in children with autism and theoretical accounts including those implicating impaired mentalising, response inhibition, and weak central coherence. Memory and language In collaboration with Prof Jill Boucher (City University) and Prof Andrew Mayes (Manchester University), I have been investigating the hypothesis that a pervasive impairment of declarative memory contributes to the language impairment in low functioning autism. Both of these research topics have attracted funding from the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC). In addition to ongoing work in both of these areas I am also conducting research in the following areas: Applied Behavioural Analysis I am interested in the effectiveness of using Applied Behavioural Analysis (ABA) to teach language to children with autism. Some pilot work has involved devising novel methods to facilitate the acquisition of receptive objects labels. Pro-environmental behaviour In collaboration with Dr Judith de Groot (Bournemouth University), I am investigating the development of pro-environmental behaviours in children and the effectiveness of interventions aimed at facilitating such behaviours.
