Profile
My research has focuses primarily on how we understand symbolic information either in the form of letters (reading and dyslexia) or icons used on computer interfaces and traffic and public information signs.
Reading My research on reading has examined the phonological and memory skills needed for children to successfully acquire reading and how to provide appropriate support from teachers and parents, particularly if children are experiencing difficulties in learning to read.
Icons and Signs This research has examined the factors influencing the ease with which we learn and comprehend icons and signs. Recent research has focussed on how we attend to, and search for, traffic signs and how this is affected by the time of day at which we carry out such tasks. Other work has examined the interplay between aesthetics and usability in human-computer interaction.
This research has attracted funding from BAE Systems, the EPSRC, the Nuffield Foundation and Sure Start.
