Profile

I am Professor of Information Jurisprudence and Director of the Centre for Intellectual Property Policy & Management (www.cippm.org.uk). CIPPM, comprising law and social science academics, is hosted by The Business School.

Currently, I am working on the following projects:
1. An Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) resource enhancement project on copyright history (with Prof. Lionel Bently) at the Centre for Intellectual Property & Information Law, Cambridge University (www.copyrighthistory.org).
2. A long term study on authors’ and artists’ earnings in the digital environment (and in particular the role of copyright therein). This has received funding from the Arts Council and authors’ collecting society ALCS.
3. A study on the law and economics of geographical indications (such as Champagne, Parma ham, Darjeeling tea, Stilton cheese). A book co-authored with Prof. Michael Blakeney (Queen Mary), Prof. Philip Hardwick (BU) and Dr Dwijen Rangnekar (Warwick) is forthcoming with Edward Elgar (2009).
4. An ESRC funded study examinining how TV Formats (one of the fastest growing programme types, and a major UK export) are exploited despite a lack of protection under intellectual property laws (with BU Media School, Jon Wardle and Sukhpreet Singh).
5. Empirical evidence relating to copyright term extension: http://www.cippm.org.uk/copyright_term.html

In 2005, I received the Informa World Leaders award for achievements in Intellectual Property Education & Training (with my colleague Prof. Ruth Soetendorp). Many of my publications on innovation policy, cultural economics and the history of ideas are available at www.cippm.org.uk. I also act as an expert witness on the valuation of intellectual property assets.
