Profile

Richard’s research interests lie in sport tourism, Olympic studies and major sporting events. His recent work has focused on emerging Olympic-related research themes connected with the 2012 Games.  Linked to this, Richard was awarded the prestigious Winston Churchill Fellowship in 2007 to undertake an Olympic education project in Australia. He is currently working on two longer term tourism research projects. The focus of these studies is to investigate host community reactions towards Olympic tourism, sport tourism and sporting events. The first project is looking at residents attitudes towards the construction of Europe’s first artificial surf reef in Bournemouth. The second, and most prominent of these long-term resident perception research projects is an Olympic-related study investigating host community reactions to major sporting events in Weymouth and Portland, which will play host to the Olympic sailing events. In both 2008 and 2009, Richard presented at two linked ESRC (Economic and Social Research Council) research seminar series events on Olympic tourism flows and community engagement respectively. In August 2008, he presented an Olympic social legacy paper in Beijing during the 2008 Games, and in the second half of 2008 he was also responsible for the completion of ‘From Parish to Podium’, the 2012 events research strategy for the South West of England, commissioned by the South West Regional Development Agency. Outside of the ‘Olympic’ research arena, Richard is currently completing his PhD research, which is an ethnographic look at the experiences of distance runners. This has resulted in journal articles and book chapters exploring the social world of the distance runner. In 2008, he was also involved with the organisation of  the ‘1st Commonwealth Conference on Sport Tourism’ in Sabah, Malaysia, attracting industry practitioners and academic delegates with an interest in sport tourism. In 2009, following the success of this conference Richard received a major award from the ESRC’s ‘International Networking and Training Opportunities’ scheme to develop a research and networking project linked to sport tourism and sporting events.  Richard is an external examiner at the University of Bedfordshire and also on the editorial board of the newly formed International Journal of Event and Festival Management.
