Profile

My main interest is the history of radio and in particular the history of talks and current affairs.  I am also interested in policies and strategies relating to broadcasting archives.  I have taught aspects of radio theory and history on the MA and BA in Radio Production at Bournemouth as well as the theory and history of documentary film on the BA in Television Production.

In my roles as Assistant Director of the Centre for Broadcasting History Research and Char of the BU Media Archive Group I have worked to develop the media archive at Bournemouth.  As part of this I have recently been involved in the acquisition of the ITA/IBA archive (the regulator of commercial broadcasting) 1955-1990.  This huge collection is now at Bournemouth and forms the focus of the physical collection.  Plans to create a specialist archive research centre in the Sir Michael Cobham Library are an important part of my current activity.

I am currently writing a history of ‘Public Issue Radio’ (for Palgrave) which will chart the development of radio talks, news and current affairs in the twentieth century and I will be submitting this to the publisher in December 2010.

I am a co-chair of the Southern Broadcasting History Group and on the editorial board of The Radio Journal.  I am working with colleagues in other universities to establish a Journal of Broadcasting History.  Related to this are plans for the forthcoming 1930s Radio Symposium at University of Wisconsin-Madison (July 2010) for which I am one of the organisers.
