Conference 2011 : Global Vision, Local Action(4th International Conference on Education for Sustainable Development and Global Citizenship)8 – 9 September 2011, Bournemouth UK Announcement 'We must ensure that the global market is embedded in broadly shared values and practices that reflect global social needs, and that all the world’s people share the benefits of globalization.' 'As the world becomes increasingly interdependent and fragile (..) we have much to learn from the ongoing collaborative search for truth and wisdom.' Our fourth 'Education for Sustainable Development and Global Citizenship' conference takes the title of ‘Global Vision, Local Action’. We shall continue to address the overlapping themes of Sustainable Development, Internationalisation and Global Citizenship but are keen to explore the interconnections between the themes and how local action addresses global concerns. We adhere to the belief that these are not separate issues: holistic approaches that encompass all aspects of university life are important if higher education is to contribute effectively to global sustainability. As the Earth Charter quote suggests, we have much to learn. Collaboration may enable us to develop new ways of seeing; working together may enhance power of our local actions. The conference aims to bring together participants who are taking forward sustainable development, internationalisation and global citizenship within the context of Further/ Higher Education. This may be through learning, teaching and assessment, student support, extra-curricular activities, initiatives that address sustainable development on campus or make connections between the local and the global. The conference themes are intended to provide broad guidance, rather than limit participation. All contributions that demonstrate relevance to addressing global perspectives and sustainable development in FE/HE will be considered.
