The Global Perspectives Group
<< Back to Global Perspectives at BU
The Global Perspectives Group was formed in 1998. The 'trigger' for developments was the initiation of a two year funded DfID (Department for International Development) 'mini project', called 'University Links'. This involved establishing a relationship with DEED (Development Education in East Dorset) with the aim of exploring the potential for Global Perspectives across the University.
Staff and student volunteers with an interest in global perspectives were invited to form a group to share concerns and develop a strategy for raising awareness of global issues, sustainability and the concept of global citizenship.
By 1999 the group had formulated the document 'A Global Vision for Bournemouth University' and in 2000 became a more formal group reporting to the Learning and Teaching Development Committee. The Pro Vice Chancellor Academic currently chairs the group. The membership has been extended to include representation from each School, Academic Services, the International Office and the Students Union. DEED and the Chaplaincy continue to be involved.
Aims
The Global Perspectives Group aim to encourage global awareness amongst staff and students and to promote the development of:
- Curricula that acknowledge the importance of global perspectives and sustainable development
- Opportunities for students and staff to develop knowledge, skills and understanding to allow them to make an effective contribution to a global society
- A culture where diversity is respected and individuals feel empowered to bring about change
- An enhanced understanding of the concept of 'citizenship' both in the local community and at a global level
