Sustainable Development

<< Back to Global Perspectives at BU

Sustainable development is simply about improving the quality of life for everyone and ensuring that whatever we do, we seek to secure that we do not detract from other peoples' enjoyment of the planet, now or in the future.

'Development which meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs.'
(Bruntland Report)

'Sustainable development is a process which enables all people to realise their potential and to improve their quality of life in ways that protect and enhance the earth's life support systems.'
(S. Ali Khan, July 1996)

It is important that when making decisions we continually ask the questions:

  • What impact will this decision have on the planet?
  • If I am using scarce resources, what are the consequences of my action?
  • What might be the unanticipated consequences?

Sustainable Development at BU

Developing the curriculum to include a consideration of sustainable development is an important aspect of global perspectives. Bournemouth University graduates quickly find themselves in positions of influence with responsibility for decisions that can impact on the lives of others. It is important that they are able to make critically informed choices and understand the consequences of their decisions for others.
