MUN Staff Overseas Travel Awards 2009-2010

Bournemouth University has a special historical relationship with the Memorial University of Newfoundland (MUN), which is the largest University in Maritime Canada. There is a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between our two institutions which enhances collaboration in the following ways:

Research

  • Collaboration in the supervision of research students
  • Collaborative research work, including joint applications for research funding
  • Academic staff (faculty) and non-academic staff exchanges and secondments.

Education

  • Development and identification of potential programme level links
  • collaboration in programme / curriculum development where appropriate
  • Student, academic staff (faculty) and non-academic staff exchanges and placements.

Enterprise activity

  • Joint dissemination of collaborative activity, to include publication and conference presentations
  • Exploration of opportunities for joint consultancy activity in areas of mutual expertise
  • Promotion of links between the wider communities of Dorset, England and Newfoundland and Labrador; building on historic associations.

Apply for funding

Academic staff are invited to apply for a special Memorial University (MUN) Staff Overseas Travel Award in order to support the development of one or more of the above activities:

  • The scheme is competitive and there are two awards of £1,000 each
  • Visits to Memorial University must be completed before October 2010 and be a minimum of 3 days;
  • The visit must focus on the development of one or more of the above areas.

Eligibility criteria:

Academic staff must meet the following conditions in order to apply:

  • You must be an academic member of staff
  • You must gain the approval and support of your Dean / Deputy Dean of Education or Executive within your School.

BU – MUN Liaison Committee

Each School has a representative on the BU-MUN Liaison Committee who can be contacted if necessary for advice on the proposal:

  • Xavier Velay - Design Engineering & Computing (DEC)
  • Mark Ridolfo – Business School (BS)
  • Sean Street - The Media School (TMS)
  • Keith Wilkes - Services Management (SM)

Conditions of MUN Staff Overseas Travel Awards

  • You do not need to have a visit confirmed before submitting an application, however if successful, the Award will only be paid after the visit has been confirmed and on receipt of your proof of travel (e.g. flight receipt)
  • The funding will be paid directly to your School via a Journal Transfer
  • It is your responsibility to ensure that you have adequate finances to carry out your visit, e.g. through contributory funding from your School
  • Following the visit you will need to complete a feed-back report and action plan for further progressing the link, which should also be presented to your School Executive and the International Collaboration & Partnerships Group.

Deadline for Applications

All applications must be received by Monday 1 March 2010.

Process

A panel will consider all applications following the deadline and decisions will be made by the beginning of April 2010.

Memorial University

Memorial University of Newfoundland (MUN) is the only university in Newfoundland and Labrador. Located on the edge of North America, MUN is in a unique location which is reflected in its research, teaching and programmes. MUN has more than one hundred undergraduate and graduate degrees and has around 18,000 students. MUN has several campuses.

Visa requirements

Many people do not require a visa to visit Canada, which includes those from Ireland, British Citizens and British Overseas Citizens who are re-admissible to the United Kingdom. Visa requirements may be subject to change however so always check the latest advice from the Canadian High Commission.
