BU Staff Overseas Travel Awards

Toronto skyline from the water

This exciting initiative encourages academic staff to apply for a BU Staff Overseas Travel Award in order to help facilitate new exchange opportunities for student and staff exchanges:

  • The scheme is competitive and there are two awards of £1000 each
  • Visits must be completed before October 2010 and be a minimum of 3 days
  • Visits must be to either existing BU partner universities or to potential new ones
  • Details about BU's current study & staff exchange links can be found in the Exchange Agreements document - (PDF - 60kb).

Eligibility criteria:

Staff need to meet the following conditions in order to apply:

  • You must be an academic member of staff
  • You must have a full-time employment contract with BU
  • You must gain the approval and support from your Dean or Deputy Dean of Education for your School.

Additional Information:

It is recognised that in order to meet BU's strategic goals in terms of its Education and Internationalisation Strategies there needs to be an increase in the number of students (particularly UK students) who have an opportunity to carry out an international experience as part of their degree. One way to achieve this is to develop study exchange links with universities overseas where the language of instruction will be in English. It is anticipated that this will be primarily in the US and Canada, but other countries may also have viable study opportunities so need not be discounted.

A study exchange must contribute towards the student's degree so it is essential that enough suitable units will be taught in English to allow the student to transfer their credits back to their BU degree.

In order to properly develop a study exchange agreement, there needs to be a good working relationship between BU and the partner university. Your School would be expected to show a commitment (e.g. financially, use of School resources, allowance of time for staff visits) in the longer term to maintaining and developing the new partnership.

Conditions of BU Staff Overseas Travel Awards

  • You do not need to have a visit confirmed before submitting an application, however if successful, the Award will only be paid after the visit has been confirmed and on receipt of your proof of travel (e.g. flight receipt)
  • The funding will be paid directly to your School via a Journal Transfer
  • It is your responsibility to ensure that you have adequate finances to carry out your visit, e.g. through contributory funding from your School
  • Following the visit you will need to complete a feed-back report and action plan for further progressing the link, which should also be presented to your School Executive and the International Collaboration & Partnerships Group
  • You should be prepared to be the 'champion' of the new exchange link.
