Saving Energy

Lighting

Ways you can help

  • Switch off lights when they are not needed
  • Make maximum use of daylight
  • Don't leave lights on in unoccupied areas
  • Ensure that someone switches off lights after hours
  • Don't switch on all the lights when only a few are needed
  • Fit labels on switches so people know which operate particular lights
  • Use desk lights if few people are in the room

Computing

Ways you can help

  • Do not switch on computers or printers until they are needed
  • Switch off monitors every time you leave your desk even if it’s just for a tea
  • Consider the use of shared printers via networks or multi channel switches
  • Switch off all computers, monitors, photocopiers and printers at the end of the working day

Heating

Ways you can help

  • Report occupancy patterns to our Energy Officer. Heating (or cooling) empty buildings or unoccupied areas is a waste of energy
  • If temperatures are too high turn the heating down rather than open windows
  • Close doors and windows when the heating is on
  • Report doors and windows that do not seal correctly to the Estates Help Desk
  • Dress appropriately for the season
  • There should be no reason to use portable electric heaters - if you are having heating problems report it on the Estates Help Desk

Cooling

Air conditioned buildings use about twice as much energy as naturally ventilated ones.
Even small 'comfort cooling' systems are expensive to run

Ways you can help

  • Ensure that cooling is not running at the same time as the heating!
  • Don't over-cool an area
  • Keep doors and windows closed when the air conditioning is running
  • Make sure the air conditioning is off when you leave the room; don’t cool empty spaces
  • Switch off equipment and lighting where possible to reduce heat gains

Water

Journalism

Ways you can help

  • Report dripping taps to the Estates Help Desk
  • Make sure taps, hoses or cooling systems are turned off after use
  • Don't use more water than you need
  • Don't wash your hands under running water - except in clinical areas
  • If the water is too hot, report it
  • Always use re-circulating systems in laboratories
  • Use a sink plug or bowl when washing dishes
  • Only fill the kettle with as much water as you need
