University Waste Management
Bournemouth University has been working jointly with the Universities of Southampton and Portsmouth to ensure the smooth transition to a new pay-by-weight waste management contract for both universities, with Waste Services (UK) Ltd, based in Southampton.
In the past we have paid a fixed fee for waste disposal per bin lifted. The new contract means that we will pay according to the weight of actual waste produced.
Therefore we are no longer paying for ‘fresh air’ in half empty bins. The wheeled bins around the campus are each fitted with a unique identification number. When the bin is lifted a computer on board the waste collection vehicle identifies the bin and weighs it while it is being emptied. When the vehicle returns to base this data is downloaded and forms the basis of the University’s waste collection invoices.
The new system will allow the University to monitor waste output more effectively, helping us better understand our waste and where it comes from, as well as identifying where waste going to landfill could be reduced.
This information will be used to help us make informed decisions about targeted waste minimisation campaigns and recycling initiatives that we can put in place effectively.
It will also allow the University to reduce the number of general waste wheeled-bins in some areas, replacing them with additional recycling facilities where possible.
The pay-by-weight contract will provide a more cost effective method of disposing of our general waste in light of the rapid growth in legislation relating to waste disposal, and the forecast increase in landfill tax.
It also acts as an economic driver for implementing recycling initiatives as we save money if we reduce the amount of general waste we dispose of.
