Cycling
The local authorities of Bournemouth Borough Council, and Borough of Poole Council have policies which aim to encourage people to use a bicycle to get to work. As part of its own Travel Plan, Bournemouth University provides and continues to improve its facilities for cyclists. We have a Bournemouth University Bike Users Group - visit their BUBUG webpages for information regarding cycling, including incentives for cyclists or contact them by emailing bubug@bournemouth.ac.uk. Routes There are a number of cycle routes around the conurbation which are designed to direct cyclists on roads where the traffic is less heavy. Bournemouth Borough Council has an online map illustrating general local cycle routes and there are also maps available as handouts showing these and the Bourne Valley Greenway. FacilitiesBournemouth University has recognized that it is important to provide the relevant facilities for those that cycle. High on a cyclist's list of priorities is the security of their bike and then somewhere that riders can shower and leave a change of clothes. Although the university has provided some of these facilities for some years it has greatly increased the availability of these facilities recently.
Once you have arrived at the University, you can secure your bike at one of the many bike racks situated around both campuses. If you want your bike to enjoy a higher level of security there are secure compounds outside of Kimmeridge House and to the rear of Bournemouth House. To use these you need to obtain an access card from either the Students Union reception, Poole House for the Talbot Campus compound, or at the Bournemouth House shop for the Lansdowne Campus compound. You will need to provide a £5 refundable deposit.
When your bike is secured, you may want to freshen up, get changed, or store some of your cycling equipment. At the Lansdowne Campus showers and lockers can be found in Bournemouth House ground floor, on the 7th floor of Studland House, and on alternate floors in Melbury House. Future developments aim to expand on facilities for cyclists on both campuses. |
