Serious Problem Solving

< Back to Halls Of Residence Survival Guide Index

Noise Nuisance

In general you should:

  • Speak to the persons concerned first - if they are not in a fit state to speak to at night speak to them in the morning
  • Not be afraid that if you are being disturbed, others are too. You do not have to accept this problem and there are few more demoralising things than sleep deprivation
  • Persistent offenders will be dealt with under the Halls Rules (see Discipline).

Neighbours from Hell

As with noise nuisance, anti-social behaviour and bullying is unacceptable in modern society and you don't have to tolerate it.

In general you should:

  • Speak to the persons concerned first
  • Not be afraid to contact security
  • Not hesitate to seek advice or support from Resident Welfare Advisors or the Residential Services Manager (office hours).

Do not mistake "student pranks" for bullying and do not leave it too long before bringing the issue to someone's attention. It is far better to deal with matters early on before they get out of hand.

Money (or lack of it)

Try hard to budget and stick to it. Partying six nights a week will soon empty your account.

In general you should:

  • Maximise income. For example, get a job (most students do) and make full use of cheap credit such as your student loan
  • Minimise expenses by budgeting, shopping weekly (not daily) buy own brands, don't borrow expensive money such as credit cards, pay on time to avoid late payment charges and bank charges
  • Pay first those who can "hurt" you most - Rent first (otherwise eviction!) Store cards last (bad credit rating for a while at worst)
  • Seek support and advice from Accommodation, Resident Welfare Advisors, Finance Officers (AskBU or the Student UnionExternal Link Advice Centre).

Don't be ashamed to ask if you get into trouble and don't ignore it - get help!
