For your safety, your house is equipped with:

  • Fire extinguisher
  • Fire blanket
  • Smoke detectors
  • Carbon monoxide alarm.

Do not endanger yourself or your housemates by tampering with this equipment.

We reserve the right to exclude offenders from University accommodation.

Testing your safety Equipment

We recommend that you periodically press the test button on your smoke alarms to check that they are working.

If they are set off accidentally, for example by burnt toast, press the hush button to stop them sounding.

Most alarms have 10-year batteries but those with shorter life batteries may start ‘beeping’ when the battery is low. If this happens, you may need to open the case and change the battery.

If you are in any doubt or you wish to report in confidence any misuse of equipment, please contact your property supervisor.

Carbon Monoxide

Carbon monoxide (CO) is a poisonous gas that is produced when fuels are burnt.

Your carbon monoxide alarm will be activated if it detects CO for example if your heating system develops a fault.

If this happens:

  • Open all the windows
  • Turn off appliances
  • Evacuate the building
  • Ring the Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111999
  • Do not re-enter the property until the alarm has stopped
  • Get medical help for anyone suffering from the effects of carbon monoxide poisoning, such as headaches and nausea, and advise that CO poisoning is suspected
  • Contact the Accommodation Office or Duty Call Out Officer to advise them what has happened and do not use the appliances again until they have been checked by an expert
  • Please refer to the instruction manual at the end of this section for information on how to reset the alarm after it has been activated.

If you suspect a gas leak at any time, evacuate the building and call the Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111999. Please also inform the Accommodation Service.
