Academic research represents the main core of activities currently undertaken by MARG staff. The group has strived to combine research with education through the active involvement of students in funded academic work. Several projects have been designed specifically to undertake research while creating a platform for training students in archaeological skills.

MARG is responsible for the management of two Protected WrecksitesExternal Link. Staff and students are also involved in collaborative projects with licensees for several other Designated Wrecksites, working together to maximise the output and dissemination of work undertaken by them over the years. Several other wreck projects are being undertaken to process and collate the available data for publication. Funding has been received from government organisations along with a wide variety of grant aiding trusts and local organisations. These are outlined on the individual project pages.

The MCA has focused its research of coastal archaeology on the assessment of cross channel trade and exchange from the late Prehistory to the Medieval period. An annual fieldschool is also being run in the Kingsbridge Estuary in association with Devon County CouncilExternal Link to enhance the Historic Environment Records (HER) within the estuary's coastal and intertidal areas

The MCA is involved with a wide range of funded research projects which involve diving. The diving projects involve field investigations and monitoring programs for wrecksites, many of which are designated, dating from the Bronze Age to the 20th century.

The MCA works in collaboration with the South West Maritime Archaeology Group (SWMAG)External Link on a wide range of projects on the South Devon coast, which have provided staff and students from the MCA with opportunities to dive on some of the most exciting and archaeologically significant sites in the UK.
