Coastline

You don’t need to dive to undertake any of our course’s, indeed they were specifically designed so that you don’t need to dive with much of our skills training occurring in the inter-tidal zone. This is because most maritime archaeology actually occurs on the surface, either working on boat finds on the beach, in the laborarty or engaging in research

For those fit and qualified students however that wish to dive Bournemouth can offer unparalleled opportunities. to take part in number of the Group diving projects, principally on the Swash Channel Wreck, but also on other projects as well dependant upon circumstances. Students are initially provided with underwater archaeological skills training in the intertidal zone and a specially created sheltered water environment before progressing to work along side the Groups professional team.

The Group is a World Underwater FederationExternal Link Scientific Diving Centre and are registered to act as a diving contractor by the United Kingdom’s Health and Safety Executive. All students that dive with the group must be medically fit as defined by the UK Sports Diving Medical CommitteeExternal Link and have reached at least CMAS 2 star diver (e.g. BSAC Sports Diver/PADI Rescue Diver). For those students that can’t already dive to need to upgrade there qualifications this can be arranged at cost via our local diving school, Dorset Diving ServicesExternal Link. All students engaged in diving must also be members of the Groups diving club Bournemouth Underwater and Marine Archaeological Diving (BSAC Branch 2428) and have received training in the Groups Diving Code of Practice Scientific Diving: Code of Conduct.
