Academic research represents the main core of activities currently undertaken by the Groups. The group has strived to combine research with education through the active involvement of students in funded academic work. Several projects have been designed specifically to undertake research while creating a platform for training students in archaeological skills.

MARG is responsible for the management of two Protected WrecksitesExternal Link, see projects below. Staff and students are also involved in collaborative projects with licensees for 8 other Designated Wrecksites, working together to maximise the output and dissemination of work undertaken by them over the years. Funding has been received from government organisations along with a wide variety of grant aiding trusts and local organisations. These are outlined on the individual project pages below.

The Group also runs an annual fieldschool for undergraduate students in the Kingsbridge Estuary in association with Devon County Council to enhance the Historic Environment Records (HER) within the estuary's coastal and intertidal areas and has undertaken a series of strategic maritime archaeological research projects which are funded by the Aggregate Levy Sustainability Fund, distributed via English Heritage.
