The purpose of this project is to evaluate the contribution that NTFPs make to the livelihoods of forest dependent rural poor in developing countries. NTFPs contribute both directly via essential goods and services, and also by generating financial income through trade, often representing one of the only sources of cash income to the rural poor. Research underway in Mexico and Bolivia is looking at the factors influencing success and the impact of different types of NTFP commercialisation on poverty alleviation and resource management at household, community, market and product level. CEPFOR is a project led by UNEP-WCMC, Cambridge, in close collaboration with ODI, London, UK, and a range of partners in Mexico and Bolivia. It is funded by the UK Department of International Development (DFID) as part of their Forestry Research Programme.
