Sport Tourism Themes
The three proposed themes for this project are 'Sport Tourism: Identities, Impacts and Issues'. However, these tentatively identified areas will initially serve merely as a guide for bursary recipients who are encouraged to develop their own research agendas and directions, dependent on individual research interests and expertise. The project aims to continue raising the international profile of sport tourism as an increasingly important market and valuable field of academic study. The STORMING Initiative will disseminate emerging research knowledge to a wider audience through the delivery of a series of post event peer reviewed publications. The one day sport tourism and sporting event 'workshops' that precede the main conferences will initially focus on a selection of research themes that emerged from the '1st Commonwealth Conference on Sport Tourism' held in May 2008 in Sabah, Malaysia. Similarly, the three underlying key themes of the project, 'Sport Tourism Identities, Impacts and Issues', will be explored in greater depth. This will be supported by any additional areas of research identified by bursary recipients and the interests and industry expertise of other delegates attending the workshops. Additionally, some of the initial areas identified in Sabah by both academic and industry based practitioners as meriting further research included the benefits that can arise from sport tourism/sporting events; the extensive potentialthat sporting activity can provide; the role of the destinationas an integral part of research discussions; the role of government in supporting and facilitating sport tourism and sporting events; debate on the infrastructure requirements for sporting activity and emerging research linked to this theme; exploration of the requirement for further research on sporting event evaluation; discussion and debate around sport tourism and sporting event legacy issues which examine the extent to which planning is crucially important; and finally, greater exploration of the importance of experiences within emerging sport tourism and event related research. These areas serve merely as a guide for 'workshops' and bursary recipients are encouraged to discuss and debate a range of issues, trends, impacts and opportunities depending on their own research interests and expertise. |
