Rallye Sunseeker Rallye Sunseeker

At the prize giving at the Marriott Hotel in Bournemouth recently reigning British Rally Champion Marcus Dodd praised the efforts of his co-driver Andrew Bargery in helping him win his seventh Rallye Sunseeker title.

Marcus said: “Andrew was magnificent, considering the conditions we faced. He called everything spot on, and even when the mid morning stages passed within yards of my own front door, he was calling me to take the correct lines, a great job as usual”.

The pair finished back in Bournemouth Town Centre 33 seconds ahead of last minute entries Andy Burton and Robin Kellard in their newly engined Peugeot Cosworth.

How, therefore, was the Motor Sport Research Group’s Kelly Goodwin lucky? Both Marcus Dodd and Andrew Bargery (pictured between stages) were again wearing body monitors as part of her groundbreaking physiological research (see Kelly Goodwin's 2010 Motorsport Research Showcase). Last year Kelly’s results were curtailed by Marcus and Andrew’s early retirement, but this year the pair went the full distance, and won.

Greetings from Murray Walker, down under!

06 April 2010

F1 commentator Murray Walker F1 commentator Murray Walker

Motorsport’s iconic F1 commentator, Murray Walker, wished BU’s Motor Sport Research Group every success from the other side of the world.

Almost exactly a year before Murray, an honorary Graduand of Bournemouth University, thrilled both the Motor Sport Research Group and students by being its principal guest at its launch.

Present for the Clipsal 500 race meeting in Adelaide, South Australia, Murray not only returned to commentating on the race for Channel 7, but hosted “Murray Walker’s Extreme Machines”.

This was a collection which included the latest exotic Ferraris, Aston Martins, Porsches and Lamborghinis that would normally have required Australians to travel to Europe to appreciate.

On meeting up with the MSRG’s Bruce Grant-Braham at the race Murray said, “Adelaide’s Clipsal 500 is motorsport’s best kept secret”.

Murray went on to get the large grid of Australian V8 Supercars entered for the feature race to fire up their engines with his characteristic catchphrase, “Go, Go, Go!”

Clipsal 500 Adelaide – Fact finding

06 April 2010

Australian V8 Supercars Australian V8 Supercars

When Adelaide lost the Australian F1 Grand Prix to rival city Melbourne the city fathers decided they must maintain their association with motor sport and make use of their infrastructure and expertise. They had also generated a popular tourism following for South Australia – “The Festival State”.

Today the Clipsal 500 Adelaide race meeting is run for two rounds of the Australian V8 Supercars as well as a host of well-subscribed supporting races. The V8 Supercars are run by Ford and Holden and this year Garth Tander (pictured) won both races for Holden much to the pleasure of the red fans.

A total of 277,800 spectators attended over the four days and each evening they could attend a free concert too with this year’s headline band being no less than Status Quo.

Dr Bruce Grant-Braham of the Motor Sport Research Group had time to visit part of the meeting on a fact finding mission.

BU research reveals rallye economy boost

08 March 2010

Sunseeker Rallye driver - (c) Bruce Grant-Braham A Sunseeker Rallye driver

A “robust” economic impact study by motor sport experts at BU has revealed that almost three-quarters of a million pounds was injected into the local economy following the 2009 Rallye Sunseeker event.

Results from the economic impact pilot study, undertaken by BU’s Motor Sport Research Group, showed that the major motor sport event, held annually in Dorset, contributed at least £718,000 towards the local economy.

A sample of 600 competitors, officials and spectators polled through questionnaires, many of which were completed online, revealed what each had individually spent on food and drink in Dorset and also with accommodation providers, such as hotels and bed and breakfast businesses.

The research also revealed travel costs of petrol and fares as well as expenditure such as car parking. It turned out that the competitors and their teams were by far the biggest spenders.

BU’s Dr Bruce Grant-Braham, Director of the Motor Sport Research Group said: “Rallye Sunseeker is a major boost to Dorset’s economy at a traditionally quiet time of the year”.

BU Lecturer and Motors Sport Research Group member, Paul Boyce, said: “We have actually taken a conservative approach to the figures as estimating the total number of spectators in Dorset’s forests is not an exact science.

“Our research intention is to develop a reliable model for gauging the contribution that motor sport events such as Rallye Sunseeker bring to destinations. We are grateful to the Rallye Sunseeker organisers who have helped us considerably in our quest to develop such a research model.”

The pilot study established that the majority of the event’s spectators came from within the local BH postcode area with a sizeable number travelling for about two hours from locations such as Reading, Oxford, Southampton, Portsmouth, Exeter and London. A small number of dedicated rally fans came from as far afield as Newcastle and Glasgow to the South Coast specifically for Rallye Sunseeker 2009.

“The Rallye Sunseeker organisers already generously provide placement opportunities for BU students within the event’s operational team of 1200 officials” said Dr Bruce Grant-Braham. “That Rallye Sunseeker 2010 and Bournemouth University continue to work together provides a Win - Win situation for everyone involved”.

Rick Smith, Rallye Sunseeker Event Director commented “We have always been certain in our own minds of the economic value of the event to the region, to have that quantified by this robust research by Bournemouth University is excellent news. However for us to be able to continuously deliver these benefits we need continued financial support from local government and business”

Research Group Director gains PhD recognition

27 January 2010

Bruce Grant Braham Dr Bruce Grant-Braham

Motor Sport Research Group Director Bruce Grant-Braham has successfully graduated with a PhD at the recent BU Awards ceremonies, which took place last November at the Bournemouth International Centre.

Whilst actually having been awarded his PhD some time before, this was the first opportunity for official recognition.

Dr Grant-Braham said: “I’m very grateful to the University for allowing me the opportunity to obtain my PhD.

BU’s generous staff development programme has enabled me to devote both time and resources for my research into a sport that I have actively followed trackside since 1968. By revealing that date it will be apparent that as a mature student the potential of life long learning is well appreciated at BU!”

Dr Grant-Braham’s PhD was based on the relationship between motorsport and sponsorship. He explains: “What clinched the PhD’s findings was the opportunity I was given by the University to attend the Motor Sport Business Forum in Monaco in 2007. Here the final pieces of the jigsaw were fitted together following discussions with some of F1’s big hitters including representatives of the Sepang Circuit in Malaysia and Renault’s then big sponsor ING”.

"Green Motorsport" is racing ahead at Autosport International 2010

26 January 2010

Radical SRZero sportscar Radical SRZero sportscar

Paul Boyce and Bruce Grant-Braham recently attended the 20th Autosport International exhibition at the NEC.

During the visit, which included a series of networking business meetings, they continued to investigate the potential of motor sport for being the proving ground for future road car engines.

What particularly caught their attention was the Radical SRZero sportscar which is powered by the latest lithium iron phosphate batteries. The 550v motors feature regenerative braking which gives a range of up to 550km between charges from a standard domestic socket. Performance isn’t compromised either as the sportscar boasts a 0-60mph time of 3.5 seconds and a top speed of 190km/h.

It is hoped that if endurance testing goes well the concept will be developed for an all-electric Radical racing series as early as 2011.

Conference paper well received

11 September 2009

Bruce Grant Braham Dr Bruce Grant-Braham

Dr Bruce Grant-Braham presented a paper entitled “Sports Tourism and Motorsports” at the prestigious “3rd Advances in Tourism Marketing Conference” the theme of which was “Marketing Innovations for Sustainable Destinations: Operations, Interactions, Experiences” hosted by Bournemouth University on 6-9 September 2009.

The well received theme of his paper was to reveal that motorsport hallmark events have actively attracted sports tourism for 107 years. The paper examined some of the motivations and outcomes of the relationship between motorsport and tourism and identified that local and national government has recognised the mutual synergy since motorsport began. The paper then examined how tourism is leveraged through motorsport with some practical examples from both circuit racing and world championship rallying. The paper identified that at the top level of motorsport, tourism is now seen as the core reason for many races to take place. Finally the paper argued that tourism organisations shouldn’t just look to encouraging attracting overseas tourists, valuable though they are, but should also look closer to home at tourism within the host country and host community too.

More than 150 tourism marketing academics and practitioners attended the conference which was organised by the Bournemouth University’s International Centre for Tourism & Hospitality Research in collaboration with the United Nations World Tourism Organization and the Universities of Valčncia (Spain), Otago (New Zealand), Mugla (Turkey) and Maribor (Slovenia).

We drive a Brawn at Silverstone

24 July 2009

A convincing 2009 Brawn GP simulation at Silverstone A convincing 2009 Brawn GP simulation at Silverstone

The Motor Sport Research Group was pleased to be asked to put a 2009 Brawn GP car through its paces at Silverstone and BU’s Research Centre Director, Bruce Grant-Braham  was called up to take the wheel.

“It was a unique opportunity”, he said, “with the responsiveness of the throttle and the steering sensitivity being complemented by the noise of the 2.4 litre V8 Mercedes engine ringing in my ears. All my senses were hugely heightened as the concentration needed to keep the car on the track was immense. I did have a fairly major off at Copse corner but the team soon rectified the damage and I was allowed out again, although my lap times were nothing to boast about. Jenson Button need not have any concerns!”

No, this is not April 1st but the launch of the new Formula One Driver business was an irresistible opportunity to examine the organisation’s simulator which never really left the patio of Poole’s Hotel du Vin. This is no simple arcade game and is of the type actually used by the real drivers to learn new circuits. At the press of a key on the computer one can even drive the new grand prix circuit in Abu Dhabi which hasn’t even been completed yet.

The unique nature of the simulator is that one climbs aboard a full size car built from the actual moulds of the real thing.  The version driven cunningly boasts a white colour scheme, which can easily be re-branded for corporate events. Even the trackside hoardings on the high quality graphics can be personally tailored too.

“The car sits on actual Bridgestone tyres and once the steering wheel has been locked in place and one’s feet have found the pedals one is immersed in a compulsive experience. Left foot braking from two hundred miles an hour into Stowe corner repeatedly defeated me despite having actually used this technique when I was a rally driver, “ said Bruce, “and I would love to have hogged the cockpit for longer to improve my times.”

Academically, the research group is looking at the implications of a wide variety of business associations with motor sport and sponsorship. The fact that this simulator can bring a racing experience to product launches, exhibitions and corporate events is a method of leveraging sponsorship investment often overlooked in the academic marketing literature.

Many thanks to Neil Holland of formulaonedriver.co.uk for the opportunity.

Hybrids are cool! Goodwood Festival of Speed 2009

7 July 2009

Frazer-Nash Namir - 06 - Goodwood FoS - 05.07.09 - (c) Bruce Grant-Braham The Frazer-Nash Namir at Goodwood

For a long time the organisers of the annual Goodwood Festival of Speed have been wanting to run a low emission class of cars up the famous Goodwood Hill, but there were simply not enough exciting vehicles around to fit the bill in the past. Thankfully this year technology has firmly moved on and dreams became reality.

These low emission vehicles did not have to be out and out speed merchants but what caught the eye of the Motor Sport Research Group and Bruce Grant-Braham in particular, were the famous makes now taking low emissions very seriously indeed. Not only was Lotus present but the legendary British sportscar name of Frazer-Nash adorned an Italdesign Giugiaro-penned concept car called the Namir. The hybrid Namir (pictured) boasts four electric motors which provide four-wheel drive along with a 814cc rotary engine. Remarkably the Namir produces just 60g/km CO2 and boasts a top speed of 187 mph.

A core aim of the Motor Sport Research Group is to examine the impact of new technologies such as hybrids which are being developed through an association with motor sport. Not only will such technologies help to reduce global warming but the vehicles themselves are now really cool too.

Research alliance sees BU racing green!

Team CVR race car (c) Bruce Grant-Braham The Team CVR race car

BournemouthUniversity’s (BU) new Motor Sport Research Group has established a research alliance with environmental motor sport competitors ‘Team CVR’, having been granted special permission from the British Touring Car Championship organizers TOCA.

Team CVR was founded with the vision to enter the HIQ MSA British Touring Car Championship as an independent, professional, environmentally efficient, race-winning team. With race cars running on biofuels, the team operates a zero carbon policy throughout.

Supporting the team’s efforts to promote an environmentally friendly approach to motor racing, experts from BU’s Motor Sport Research Group, based within the School of Services Management, will carry out key market research of the team’s impact in the media including television, print and online.

The partnership will mean that the BU logo, displayed on the cars, will be seen in national media coverage of the country’s premier racing series as the team competes at prestigious circuits including Brands Hatch and Silverstone.

Dr Bruce Grant-Braham, director of the Motor Sport Research Group said: “The team’s race cars produce significantly less carbon emissions than their road going counterparts and, in common with BU’s green philosophy, we are very lucky to be able to examine the evolution of such technology at first hand”.

Pushing towards a concept of using motor sport to highlight a more environmentally conscious way of operating, Team CVR, who is sponsored by Cartridge World, aims to minimize emissions from its entire operation and offset any balance through energy efficiency projects in Africa, providing fuel-efficient stoves to local communities.

Team principal Colin Neill said: “The environmental impact of motor sport will play a strong part in Team CVR’s development and we hope this will have an effect on all aspects of the wider automobile industry.”

Experts from the new group are already working on a number of groundbreaking research projects which will provide new and interesting insights into the sport’s competitors and how the sport is perceived.
The group is also working with Cartridge World Carbon Zero, a new British Touring Car team, to research the effectiveness of their branding. The team is the only one in Europe to take a ‘zero carbon’ approach. Future projects with top speedway team Poole Pirates are also being discussed.
Dr Bruce Grant Braham, Director of the Centre, said: “Our newly formed group provides a wonderful opportunity to use our wide range of expertise to provide our students with a winning curriculum.
“We aim to lead business research on both four and two wheels thereby mirroring BU’s race to success in the academic league tables.”
The launch of the group builds on BU’s continuing commitment to research. In the recent Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) the University was rated as the fourth most improved UK university in terms of research quality.
