Progress

Welcome to this fourth issue of Progress which brings you news of both research and enterprise activity conducted within the School of Services Management and its three research centres; The Market Research Group (MRG), the International Centre for Tourism & Hospitality Research (ICTHR) and the Centre for Event & Sport Research (CESR).

With over ninety delegates from across the world in attendance, the School’s ‘Extraordinary Experiences’ conference held back in September proved to be a tremendous success. The conference, which focused on how the hospitality, leisure, sports and retail industries manage consumer experiences to make them more memorable and unique, proved popular with both academics and professionals. The relevance of the topic to the local economy was underlined by keynote speaker, David Hoare of Hall and Woodhouse, who described how his company is using a focus on improving the customer ‘experience’ to revitalise its chain of traditional public houses.

This issue of Progress also introduces a number of new research staff who have joined the School in recent months and provides an update on many of the projects currently being led and managed by staff from across the School’s three research centres. Particular attention is given to work being conducted by staff within the Foodservice & Applied Nutrition Research Group within ICTHR and projects being investigated by staff within CESR. One such project reports on the high levels of public support in Weymouth and Portland for the Sailing events due to be hosted at the National Sailing Academy; a theme to be explored in the forthcoming ESRC Seminar Series on the London 2012 Games with the first event being hosted by the School in January, 2008. I hope you enjoy the contents of this issue of Progress!

This is particularly true for the 53 countries of the Commonwealth who account for nearly 1 in every 8 tourist arrivals.
