Welcome to the Centre of Postgraduate Medical Research and Education (CoPMRE). This Research Centre is a part of the The School of Health & Social Care.

The Centre of Postgraduate Medical Research and Education (CoPMRE) was opened by the Vice Chancellor in June 2007 to complement academic groups in Nursing, Midwifery, Rehabilitation Science, Community Care and Social Work. CoMPRE consists of a team of hospital based clinicians with track records in linking clinical research questions to University based disciplines. A Faculty was established in 2005 with Visiting Fellows or Visiting Professors having their University time included in their NHS job plans.

The Centre is housed within the School of Health and Social Care. Infrastructure and administrative staff are funded by the University. A Research Steering Committee and an Education Steering Committee have been established with representatives from the University and local NHS Hospital, Primary Care and Community Trusts. Each Committee meets three times per year and reports to a Board chaired by Dame Yvonne Moores.

The Dorset Research and Development Support Unit External Link provides statistical and methodological advice to CoPMRE members and the Centre is associated with the Dorset Research Governance Consortium facilitating common procedures for grant and ethics committee applications across Dorset.

We have particular research interests in cancer, diabetes, stroke/vascular disease, neurophysiology, respiratory function in older people, neonatology and mind and body medicine (see RAE 2007 in the research section). Together with colleagues in the School of Health and Social Care, there are excellent opportunities to develop inter-disciplinary projects using mixed methodologies. CoMPRE is also looking across BU in media studies, computer animation, forensic archaeology and bioengineering to encourage novel collaborations between the Schools.

Collaboration between the clinical tutors/ foundation directors from local NHS Trusts and University lecturer practitioners, has also led to the development of the Professional Skills in Medicine for F2 Doctors course which is delivered to 80 or so junior doctors in Dorset. From the F2 course we have developed a Postgraduate Certificate in Professional Practice (Medicine) allowing junior doctors to take a detailed look at an aspect of their practice and enrich their portfolios while in post at local hospitals.

More information can be found in the research and education sections of this site with details of the committee and visiting faculty members and their publications.
