With new career progression pathways established by the Modernising Medical Careers agenda, and the reduction in funding available for postgraduate medical study, there is increased competition for academic places at higher education institutions and hospitals. NHS trusts are looking for alternative sources of education and training.

With this changing landscape, there is now considerable opportunity for developing accredited courses linked to education for local doctors from qualification, through the training grades and beyond.

To meet the growing needs of a large population of local doctors interested in developing their careers, the Centre of Postgraduate Medical Research and Education (CoPMRE) has established an Education Steering Committee, comprising:

  • Clinical Tutors and Foundation Directors from local NHS Acute, Community and Primary Care Trusts
  • Representatives from the South West Strategic Health Authority Deanery
  • Bournemouth University

Current initiatives include the joint delivery by Clinical Tutors and University lecturers of the Foundation Year 2 Professional Skills curriculum, joint supervised projects for MSc healthcare students, Certificate/Diploma/MAs linked to education for local doctors and PhD Studentship opportunities.
