In anticipation of the training and curriculum changes, instigated following the Government’s strategy paper, Modernising Medical Careers, a pilot scheme was established in Poole and Bournemouth hospitals in August 2004 and a programme covering all six elements of the Generic Skills curriculum was delivered by Clinical Tutors, in six separate one day sessions.
Following this successful pilot project, discussions between IHCS and the Wessex Deanery, Dorset Acute NHS Trusts, Workforce Development Confederation and others noted a potential collaboration in the delivery of PG training in the Generic Skills component of the new curriculum for newly qualified doctors in Foundation Year 2 (F2). Agreement was reached that the Institute of Health and Community Studies at Bournemouth University (IHCS) who had a considerable reputation for the effective delivery of interprofessional education should work with the other partners to explore how this expertise might contribute to the development and delivery of the Generic Skills component at F2. It was recognised that there would be mutual benefits of involving IHCS in postgraduate education because of the perceived benefits of inter-disciplinary models of professional education and the potential for developing programmes which could be academically accredited at Masters (M) level at some stage in the future.
The programme, Professional Skills for F2 Doctors, has now been running for 3 years and provides the compulsory elements of training that are required at this stage in the medical career. The learning and teaching opportunities have been improved year on year following feedback from participants and also growing expertise in this area in the Programme team. Below is a brief view of the themes for the programme, which is delivered over six whole days for each of 3 cohorts.
