Research Governance

Research Governance is the system which ensures that research projects conform to a minimum set of standards. These standards are put in place to protect researchers, participants and organisations and to manage risk.

Research involving the NHS, either through its patients or staff, is required to conform to the Research Governance Framework Department of Health and Social Care (PDF 358kb).

From 2009, the acute Trusts in Dorset have agreed to consider research proposals as a consortium so that there is a single point of entry for the approval process. This will increase efficiency especially where patients may be recruited from more than one site in Dorset. The Dorset Research Consortium will centralise governance enabling more efficient process, faster turnaround times and more effective monitoring. In addition, it intends to be proactive in contributing to the CoPMRE led research support package in providing advice and guidance through the approval process, contractual issues between collaborators and full financial management.
