I completed my undergraduate degrees and my PhD in South Africa and have worked in academia for over twenty years. During that time I have practiced as a musculoskeletal physiotherapist, developed my own research and expanded my academic career. Because my training background covers both physical and cellular aspects of health care I have a particular interest in relating health care management to the biosciences. At present I have projects in Breast Cancer, Spinal Cord Injuries and Diabetes.

I juggle this together with being a mom and every now and then escape to the tranquillity of the African bush. At CoPMRE I have the exciting task of developing trials in cancer and working with a wonderful team to set up the Clinical Trials Unit.

Research Themes include:

  • Cancer.
  • Diabetes.
  • Neurophysiology.
  • Stroke/Vascular.
  • Mind and Body Medicine.
  • Cell and molecular biology in forensic medicine.

Professor Peter Thomas

I will be working to establish close collaborations with other researchers in the Centre, and to develop the statistical and methodological support that is available. I have spent my career working on quantitative aspects of health research.

In 1991 I completed my PhD thesis on the epidemiology of hypertension in pregnancy at the University of Bristol, and in 1994 was awarded Chartered Statistician status by the Royal Statistical Society. I then moved to Jamaica where I worked at the MRC Sickle Cell Unit, providing statistical advice and support to the clinical and scientific research staff, and conducting my own epidemiological research.

Since coming to work at Bournemouth University in 1996, I have provided research support, advice and training service to health care professionals and academics in Dorset.

My current research interests are in psychological aspects of chronic disease as they relate to cause, progression and treatment, and I co-lead a Mind-Body research program. Recent projects include the Cochrane systematic review of psychological interventions for multiple sclerosis, and the development and evaluation of a fatigue management program.
