Gathering peoples’ ideas and opinions: Introduction to focus groups
For postgraduate students, academics and professionals.
21 – 22 October 2010

The masterclass will introduce the method of focus group interviews. Over two days you will cover a research ‘journey’, starting with the epistemological basis of qualitative research, the aims and objectives of focus groups and the practicalities of undertaking focus groups, analysing and writing up focus group data.

This masterclass is suited to postgraduate students, academics and professionals from a variety of disciplinary backgrounds who wish to engage with focus group research, and who may wish to find out more about the range of possibilities of this approach for research and practice.

How will you benefit from attending the Masterclass

  • Discover the strengths and weaknesses of focus group research.
  • Take part in discussion relating to the situations and contexts where focus group research is useful.
  • Engage in practical issues in preparing for and running a focus group.
  • Participate in group exercises to include running a focus group and subsequent reflection on the process.
  • Consider the analysis of data and the best ways of presenting findings from focus group research.

Masterclass Facilitators

  • Prof. Edwin van Teijlingen is a medical sociologist with extensive experience in conducting focus groups research. He has run similar workshops on focus group research in Scotland and Nepal.
  • Prof. Kathleen Galvin has undertaken many qualitative evaluations of services that have used focus group methods across a range of contexts including sexual health, drug use and service delivery in health and social care.

The Masterclass will take place at Bournemouth House, Lansdowne Campus, within walking distance of the city centre, hotels and the train station.

Costs and booking information

The fee of £99.00 for this Masterclass includes two full days (21 & 22 October) with the course facilitators, all refreshments and all class materials. Accommodation and travel costs are not included. Places are limited and operate on a ‘first come, first served’ basis.
