Centre for Qualitative Research : Performative Social Science
Friday 29th June 2007 Producing an alternative, arts-based thesis Using bricolage and arts-based methodologies to produce two hand-made artist's books, Sally Berridge produced a successful and creative PhD project concerned with autobiography, memory and identity. The first book of the thesis, Tissue, is autobiographical in nature. The pages are printed on a variety of media including tissue, rice and silk papers, calico and silk fabrics, water colour paper, parchment, transparent drafting paper and paper made from elephant dung. The second book, Re-picturing my life, is the theoretical component of the thesis. It too contains a number of images, although these are illustrative rather than constitutive. It deals with current theories concerning arts-based research and bricolage, memory, autobiography, identity, imagination and time. Seminar participants will enjoy the tactile experience of handling the two volumes. Sally originally trained as an agricultural scientist in the field of animal nutrition. Since then she has worked as a freelance writer, editor and designer, often making scientific research results accessible and useful to non-scientists. Her PhD was awarded in December 2006.
