Setting up your Support
Please contact us as soon as possible so that we can meet with you and establish the appropriate support.
We can then ensure that the appropriate support is in place not only for lectures, assignments etc, but also for examinations, when you may be entitled to extra exam support. You may also be entitled to enhanced loan periods on books borrowed from the Library.
Evidence:
Bring any existing "evidence" of your Additional Learning Need, as this will help to speed up the process of putting support in place. Acceptable evidence could be:
- Letter from your GP or specialist
If you have a medical condition, sensory impairment or mental health difficulty, we will need a letter from your GP or specialist. This letter should explain how your ALN affects you in your studies, and/or in an exam situation
- Educational Psychologist Report or Assessment
In the case of a specific learning difficulty/difference, you will need to provide an assessment from an educational psychologist. An existing report is likely to be acceptable, as long as you have been assessed since becoming 16 years of age.
Temporary illness or injury:
If you have a temporary illness or injury that may affect your ability to write or to take part in examinations under normal conditions, please come and see us to arrange help. You will need to provide a letter from your GP or specialist.
Assessment and recommendations:
When you come for your appointment, an adviser will assess your educational needs. Recommendations will be made to your Programme Leader, and additional support could be arranged e.g. access to a support worker.
No Evidence?
If you can’t provide any evidence, please still come and see an ALN Adviser and we will advise you accordingly. This could involve us in:
- arranging a screening and diagnostic assessment for a specific learning difficulty/differnece
- writing to health and social care professionals you have been in contact with to request information concerning your additional learning need. If you require us to do this we will need your explicit permission
