E-Learning Benchmarking BlogThis blog has been set up to record the progress of the E-Learning Benchmarking Exercise currently being undertaken at Bournemouth University. Final IRDThe final IRD was completed on time to send to the OBHE consultants thanks to a lot of hard work from our Benchmarking team and the office in collating and formatting the final document. It was hard work but has definitely been a worthwhile exercise. Created by Barbara Newland (24/01/2007 12:00 PM) Draft versions of the IRDThe first draft of the IRD was completed by 20 December due to the hard work on the project team and the research assistants writing up the sections from the data collected. It was circulated to the E-learning Strategy Group for comment by email. Following comments, the second version was circulated to the same group on 10 January before their meeting on 11 January. Created by Barbara Newland ( 11/01/2007 12:38 PM) Another meeting with the consultantOur consultant, Cliff Wragg, visited again on 15 December and met with the Project Team. He gave us very helpful advice on how to collate all the data from our focus groups and surveys into the draft IRD, which we are going to circulate to the E-learning Benchmarking Strategy Group on 20 December for comment. The first visit helped to develop our methodology and implementation plans through meetings with the Project team. Cliff also described the aims of the exercise to the E-learning Strategy Group which is the steering group for this exercise and a meeting of the E-leaning special interest group. The second visit was with Rosemary Pope, PVC for learning and teaching. It was worth attending despite the length of travelling time and poor venue, as Svava Bjarnason and her team provided a clear overview of the OBHE/ACU methodology and a chance to network with others using the same methodolgy. Created by Barbara Newland (01/12/2006 7:49 PM) MethodologyA range of methods are being used to collate the data to inform the completion of the IRD, which include focus groups, interviews and online surveys. The online surveys are to obtain data about institutional drivers from a small group of individuals and to find out about the use of e-learning across the university. The focus groups of staff have been arranged around existing groups and committees to discuss sections of the IRD. These focus groups include:
The focus groups with the students are being organised with the assistance of the Student Union. Created by Barbara Newland (01/12/2006 7:43 PM) Benchmarking methodology – the rationale for our choiceBU selected the benchmarking methodology of the Association of Commonwealth Universities Observatory on Borderless Higher Education (ACU/OBHE). This requires the completion of an Institutional Review Document (IRD) using questions prepared by the ACU/OBHE team. The IRD is intended to provide the basis for rigorous institutional self-review and is based on how HEIs operate at present. All information provided to the OBHE consultants by participating HEIs is on a confidential basis. The ACU/OBHE methodology was selected by BU as it provided a structured framework that closely related to developments at BU at a time of major changes. Bournemouth is part of Phase 1 of the benchmarking exercise and details about this are available at http://www.bournemouth.ac.uk/eds/benchmarking/. The project management consists of the E-learning Benchmarking Strategy Group which is BU's E-learning Strategy Steering Group, a subgroup of the Learning and Teaching Development Committe, and the smaller E-learning Benchmarking Project Group of Dr Barbara Newland, Janice Hurne, Jill Beard and Linda Byles.
