Learn: Defined in a dictionary

Course Overview

This programme aims to enhance your understanding of educational approaches that contribute to developing university students as self-motivated, independent, life-long learners. If you are new to teaching in higher education, this programme will provide you with guidance on effective ways to develop students as learners and help you to develop a professional, reflective approach to your educational practice. If you are an experienced academic, you may be interested in taking one or more of the units as part of your continuing professional development, for example, to update your knowledge of flexible learning approaches.

If you are working in the health and social care sector and supporting or leading learning and assessing in practice, the programme will enable you to enhance your education practice.

Course Content

  1. Introduction to Education Practice, a 20 credit unit which will run twice during the academic year, during the Autumn and Summer terms, subject to numbers. The unit aims to prepare you to support student learning in a higher education and practice setting. It will provide you with the underpinning knowledge and skills to enable you to embark on your academic careers as reflective and scholarly practitioners.
  2. Enhancing Education Practice, a 20 credit unit delivered in the Spring term. The unit will provide you with an opportunity to design and implement effective learning environments. It will enable you to develop your understanding of curriculum design and the underlying factors which shape this process.
  3. Developing Education in Professional Practice, a 20 credit unit delivered over the year. The unit will provide you with the opportunity to consolidate research-led educational practice and scholarship. Students will be supported to critically reflect on their own professional development.

Professional Accreditation

Higher Education Academy ( HEA ) and Nursing & Midwifery Council ( NMC )

The programme will enable you to meet the HEA Professional Standards Framework for teaching and supporting learning in higher education. Successful completion of Unit A leads to Associate Fellowship and achievement of all three units (A,B, and C) leads to Fellowship of the HEA . For nurses and midwives, completion of the three units will enable you to register for the NMC Teacher standard.

Timetable for 2008/09

Workshops will take place on Thursday morning 9.00 – 12.00 (3 hours) in the Octagon in the Sir Michael Cobham Library at Talbot Campus, starting on 2nd October 2008 . The University's VLE, myBU , is used extensively throughout the programme in support of a blended learning experience.

Flexible

The programme runs over one year, but participants can choose to take individual units over a two year period, to fit in with individual work commitments. You are advised to discuss the implications for a balanced workload and probation requirements with your Line Manager. To explore the options available, see contact details below.

Assessment of Prior Learning

If you already have some experience of HE level teaching, or hold another relevant teaching qualification, you may be eligible for credit against some of the units which will enable you to ‘fast track' through the programme.
