Bournemouth University Learning and Teaching Conference 15 May 2007

Re-inventing the student experience for an academically-led university

The over-arching aim of this year’s Learning and Teaching Conference was to explore and challenge thinking on current issues that have an impact on the student learning experience. Presentations focused on two major strands: independent learning and e-learning

Contributions providing examples of developing “independent learning” included: using assessment to motivate students, encouraging cross-disciplinary working and problem based learning, as well as PAL and SteppingStones2HE.

Contributions providing examples of e-learning revealed some of the challenges as well as the successes, both for tutors and students, of engaging with e-learning and also demonstrated the use of podcasts, blogs and text messaging.

After an enthusiastic welcome from Professor Rosemary Pope , Pro-Vice Chancellor (Education), the day began with a thought-provoking keynote from Dr Mike Neary entitled: Student as Producer: Reinventing the Undergraduate Curriculum and ended with a lively discussion forum in the style of a World Café event, led by Dr Katy Newell-Jones. During this last session delegates had the chance to declare the values and intentions they thought should be espoused around learning relationships in an academically-led university and provided guidance to the University on how its space might be better configured to enhance learning. The paper tablecloths used to collect these ideas have been ‘transcribed’ and added to this site

Ben Howard and Jenni Winter from the Students’ Union presented a ‘vox pop’ video that they had compiled by videoing students on both campuses talking about their experiences of learning spaces This is an important record of student views on the ways in which spaces have an impact on their learning.

The BU Learning and Teaching Fellows for 2007/08 were presented with their awards by Professor Rosemary Pope .
