How can I study?
Many of our courses are delivered in a variety of ways to suit your individual needs and circumstances. Some courses are delivered entirely online (distance learning), enabling you to study anytime, anywhere. Others involve study on our campuses, but at times more convenient to you.
Study options:
Part-time study and short courses - on campus
These courses, on the BU campus, may be offered in the evenings, weekends or during the week depending on the particular course you are interested in. They enable you to continue working or maintain your other commitments while still enjoying the highly interactive elements of campus-based study. You will develop close links with your fellow students and tutors through face-to-face contact, discussion and debate.
Some of our 'full' degree courses can also be studied on a part-time, as well as full-time, basis. Obviously you will not be studying the course as intensively as full-time students, so you will find the total length of the course will be longer.
Our short courses, of one to five days duration, allow you to break your studies into more manageable 'bite-sized' elements and only require you to be on campus for a few days at a time. Some also offer you the opportunity to gain academic credits for your studies, so you can build your own tailored qualification as you go.
Online and distance learning
Online and distance learning courses enable you to study where and when you want. Specialist tutors will offer you direct academic support through myBU, our Virtual Learning Environment (VLE). Some of our online courses do also include elements of study on campus - enabling you to gain the 'best of both worlds'.
Other courses are delivered totally online so you don't need to visit the University at all. These courses are ideal if you can't commit to a certain time each week or live some distance away. You will still benefit from interaction with fellow students through online discussion forums and so never need to feel you are studying alone. The flexibility of the course is great. I can study when I want. It means that I can balance work, family and study. - Joanne Dignam, e-learning student
(Joanne studied a Foundation degree in Business and Management, which was delivered entirely online over 19 months).
