Scholarships
These can be awarded to individuals who can show they have made significant additional contributions to their community; in academia/music or sporting achievements. For more details of the criteria and how to apply please visit our Scholarship information.
Payment by Instalments
Fees for part-time programmes can be paid in either four or eight monthly instalments. The first instalment will be before or on your enrolment date and then monthly thereafter. The monthly payments must be made by a debit or credit card and will be automatically collected every month. If you chose the pay by instalments you will not be able to claim the 5% discount (i.e. the payment in full discount see below).
Please note: instalment payments do not apply to short courses (i.e. those courses that are usually only a few days duration), in most cases you will need to pay for these courses in full before they start. If you are unsure whether this applies to the course you are interested in, please refer to the 'Fees and Funding' pages, for your particular course, on Course Search. If applicable the Course Search entry will state if instalment payments are available.
Professional and Career Development Loans
Professional and Career Development Loans are bank loans that can be used to help pay for work related learning. You can borrow between £300 and £10,000 to help support the cost of up to two years of learning (or three years if it includes one year’s relevant unpaid practical work). The Learning and Skills Council will pay the interest on the loan while you are learning and for one month afterwards. The loan can be used to pay course fees or other costs such as travel and living expenses. You can also use the loan to supplement other forms of support such as grants or bursaries. Because the Professional and Career Development Loan is a commercial loan product, they should only be considered as an option once all other student funding options have been investigated.
For further information on financial assistance to support your learning, please visit www.direct.gov.uk/adultlearning or contact Careers Advice on 0800 100 900. To apply for a PCDL you will need to quote our learner provider number which is 7158.
(Please note: EU (non-UK) students are not eligible for this loan).
Discounts
We are able to offer a 5% discount on your part-time or flexible course fees if you pay the full fee due to the University at or before enrolment. In addition, if you have previously graduated on a course at BU and then enrol for a further course you are eligible to a 15% discount on tuition fees. The maximum discount available to any student in any one academic year is a total of 20%.
Fee and Course Grant
If you are a part-time undergraduate student studying a minimum of 50% of the credits of an equivalent full-time course (50% course intensity) you may be eligible for tuition fee grants. All grants are linked to household income and grants do not have to be repaid. For more information please visit Direct.gov.uk - Finance for Part-time Students to see if you may be eligible.
Help from your employer
With the close links all of our courses have to the workplace and projects/assignments that are drawn from the 'real world' your employer may be willing to fund some or all of the cost of your studies. When approaching them it is worth 'putting yourself in their shoes' and trying to think how the course and your new knowledge/skills will benefit the company and/or your current job. Be prepared with all the course information to hand when you raise the subject with them - as it is likely they will want to see the whole picture/cost implications before making a commitment. You may find that they may not be able to help with the actual funding, but may be able to be more flexible with your working hours and/or provide time off to attend study sessions.
Disabled Students Allowance
This allowance (DSA) is a grant provided by Central Government through Local Authorities (LAs), to help meet the additional costs that students with an additional learning need might incur whilst studying at University. Our Disability Support pages will be able to provide further support and guidance if you think you may be eligible.
Access to Learning Fund
These are non-repayable awards that can provide help if you have financial difficulty during your course. The funds can be used to help with childcare, travel, accommodation, books/ equipment and general expenses. For more details please email askBU
