Vegard Engen

MSc Advanced Computing by Research 2005-6

PhD Computer Science 2006

I came to Bournemouth University in 2005 to study for a Masters degree in computing. I was really attracted by the courses they offered and if I was in any doubt in the beginning, the communication with the friendly staff at the University quickly made me feel that it was the right choice for me. The MSc allowed me to work with the state-of-the-art in artificial intelligence within a vibrant research atmosphere. This, in turn, lead to a PhD studentship, fully funded by the University. It’s hard to imagine I didn’t know a thing about research before coming here!

It’s very hard to sum up all the things I have learned from my studies at Bournemouth University. The fact that I’ve stayed on to do a PhD just goes to show how great it has been. I have been able to work with very talented people, which has stimulated my creativity and given me knowledge and skills that will be invaluable for my future career.

Alongside the studies, the Students’ Union and international support staff at the University have offered a plethora of opportunities that have made the experience even more rewarding. For example, I have taken advantage of several trips to visit other places around the UK, various social activities, volunteering and personal and professional development.

Bournemouth is located on the south coast of England, with a great beach and amazing surrounding areas such as the Jurassic coast and the Isle of Purbeck. I love going for walks in the countryside and when the wind is good I go kitesurfing!

How would you sum up your experience in one sentence?

I didn’t know what I would come to when I started my studies here, but it made me realize what I really had a passion for and I have never enjoyed doing something as much as I have here.
