Presentation - Understanding the nature of and opportunities for word-of-mouth communication - Fiona Cownie, Media School

Address: British Council Siam Square
254 Chulalongkorn Soi 64 Siam Square, Phyathai Road Pathumwan, Bangkok 10330 +66 (0)2 657 5678

Word-of-mouth is consistently ranked as the most trusted form of communication. Evidence suggests that higher levels of positive word-of-mouth and lower levels of negative word of mouth drive business growth.

Fiona Cownie, Head of Student Experience within the Media School at Bournemouth University explores word-of-mouth communication, considering what it comprises and who engages in word-of-mouth. Fiona provides examples of word-of mouth communication strategies in practice including 'referral marketing', considers the use of net promoter scores (nps) and shares the outcomes of her ongoing research into students' word-of-mouth intentions within higher education.

Fiona Cownie profile:

An energetic and enthusiastic academic, with a background in advertising and direct marketing practice, Fiona Cownie is committed to enhancing students' experiences at Bournemouth University. Fiona is Head of the Student Experience in the Media School and works with colleagues within the school and across the university to develop strategic thinking focussed upon offering Bournemouth students a great educational experience.

Fiona has worked in a number of roles within the University, most recently heading the Media Academic Group. Fiona's work in curriculum development saw collaborative education put centre stage within undergraduate and postgraduate pedagogic strategy with the aim of developing transferable and specialist skills appropriate to a cross-platform media environment. In recognition of this work, Fiona received a BU the 'Outstanding learning and teaching award'.

Fiona's doctoral study is in the area of relationship marketing and higher education. Her thesis examines students' commitment within higher education and its impact on students' intentions to emit word-of-mouth communication.

Employers are demanding from University graduates an increasingly broad and complex array of attributes, qualities and behaviours, in order to remain competitive and expand their businesses. Universities therefore must ensure they meet employers' expectations, by providing learning experiences and programmes of study that are not only academically rigorous, but which also help students develop their 'employability'.

Mark Ridolfo, Associate Dean (Student Experience) in the Business School at Bournemouth University, will examine how Universities can produce 'Global Graduates' with the attributes to become 'Global Graduates'.

In 2003, Mark was awarded the Bournemouth University Fellowship, along with his colleague, Bill Beetham, for outstanding and innovative work in internationalising the curriculum. Mark has given many workshop and conference presentations on this subject. In 2011, Mark's contribution to learning, teaching and assessment at Bournemouth University was further recognised, as he became the first recipient of the Vice Chancellor's Award for Making an Exceptional Contribution to Enhancing the Student Experience.
