Academic Progress - Assesments, Attendance & Examinations

A student must be enrolled on a full-time degree awarding course and taking the required credit load for full-time undergraduate or postgraduate degree courses.

A student is expected to attend all scheduled academic activities for the course on which they are enrolled.

Students must comply with their responsibilities in respect of coursework / examinations / assessment. It is the responsibility of each student to familiarise him / herself with these responsibilities, as contained in the Course Handbook and the Assessment Procedures document.

In order to remain eligible, a student / borrower must successfully complete each course with a passing grade for any assignments / examinations as defined and required for each course, and which equate to the number of credits earned. Failure, withdrawal, incomplete or other designations indicating a negative status for attempted courses are not considered successful completion. Courses that are repeated will be counted in the calculation of credits attempted and will be counted as credits earned when the student receives a passing grade. Students enrolled in undergraduate or postgraduate degree courses must achieve the minimum required passing grade in each course taken at BU.

Enrolment status will be continuously reviewed throughout the academic year. For our full satisfactory Academic Progress policy, please refer to the Student Policies, Procedures and Regulations.

Refund Policy

If you withdraw from your course during the year, the University will refund a proportion of the contribution you have made to the fees that you have paid (as outlined on page one of the Payment Agreement). This proportion will vary depending upon the time in the year at which you withdraw. This withdrawal policy, whilst being fair to students, recognises the resources already committed by the University.

Term 1: If you withdraw within 4 weeks of the start of the term/course, you will receive a full refund of any contribution to your fees that you have paid, less an administration charge of £50.

Term 2: If you withdraw within 10 days of the start of the second term of your course, you will receive a refund of any contribution paid in excess of 40% of the total contribution for the year/course.

Term 3: If you withdraw within 10 days of the start of the third term of your course, you will receive a refund of any contribution paid in excess of 70% of the total contribution for the year/course. If you withdraw after 10 days from the start of the 3rd term of your course you will receive no refund.

Withdrawal refunds will not be processed until mid-November at the earliest

Please Note: The above do not apply to Federal Aid students who used loan funds to settle their fees. Under federal regulations, federal loan funds must be returned to the US Dept of Education if students withdraw before and up to the 60% mark of their year of study. Please see Withdrawal and the Return of Federal Aid Loans Funds.
