English Language requirements
EU (non-UK)/non-EU students
If English is not your first language, you will need to provide evidence that you can read, write, speak and understand English to a satisfactory level.
Taught postgraduate (Masters) degrees
English language requirements, for the majority of our taught Masters courses, are normally a minimum of one of the below.
- Successful completion of one of Bournemouth University’s Preparatory English Programmes, or
- IELTS (Academic) 6.0
- TOEFL (internet-based) 80
- TOEFL (paper-based) 550
For some courses where communication is especially important, the grades required may be higher and a minimum score in individual components may be requested. For further details take a look at the course information in our Course Search.
If you have alternative evidence of English Language proficiency (eg. you have a different English language qualification, you received the majority of your education through the medium of English, or you have a degree in English language/literature), please indicate this on your application form.
Research degrees
Assessment of your research degree will be in English. If your first language is not English, you will be required to provide evidence of proficiency in the use of English.
The English language requirement for entry onto a research degree is normally a minimum of one of the below.
- IELTS (Academic) 6.5
- TOEFL (internet-based) 90
- TOEFL (paper-based) 575
If you require additional English language training prior to University entrance, we can refer you to an appropriate course at one of our Partner Colleges, or an accredited English Language school.
