We don't just pride ourselves on academic excellence at BU; we actively promote participation in music and the arts too. We can provide financial assistance for outstanding musicians or singers who can help promote BU through their art and raise the profile of the University's performance-based output.
Which nationalities may apply for this scholarship?
Applicants subject to pay fees at the UK/EU rate may apply.
To which courses does this scholarship apply?
- All BU undergraduate and most taught postgraduate courses, including BU courses delivered at a BU South West Region Partner College
- All full-time and part-time courses (awards for a part-time course will be made on a pro-rata basis).

How much is the scholarship worth?
Two types of music scholarship may be awarded:
- A Major award is worth £1,000, normally paid in kind by covering the costs of instruments or tuition
- A Minor award is worth around £300 and covers BU tuition for instruments or vocals.
Scholarships will be paid for the first year of study and may be continued for subsequent years of study providing you continue to meet the criteria.
How is this scholarship paid?
Scholarships will normally be paid in kind (tuition and equipment).
How many scholarships are awarded annually?
Music Scholarships to the value of £15,000 per annum in total will be awarded in any one year.
What are the criteria for this scholarship?
- You must be able demonstrate that you are a talented instrumentalist or vocalist
- You will normally have reached at least Grade VIII of the Associated Board or the equivalent level, and have been involved in ensemble activity
- You must demonstrate how you wish to develop musically, as well as academically.
Other information about this scholarship:
Recipients of this scholarship cannot be in receipt of any other BU scholarship.

The deadline for applications is 31 July 2010. Late applications may be considered if there are funds remaining.
When will I hear if I have been successful?
If your application is shortlisted you will be invited to an audition. We will let you know the outcome in principle two weeks after you come and see us; however your award will not be formally approved until you hold an unconditional firm offer.
