Angela Wilson
PhD student
Angela Wilson chose BU because it matched her research needs and provided a modern and accessible environment in which to complete a PhD in Archaeology.
I had a lot of learning and teaching experience in higher education from my previous job as a lecturer so I knew what to expect. This prepared me very well for my PhD and was obviously a big advantage when I applied here.
BU is committed to expanding its research base, with several specialist Centres now set up to assist students in their PhD investigations. Several of our Schools are already renowned for their groundbreaking research and the University as a whole continues to build on this reputation.
Angela believes Bournemouth and Poole offer everything a student could need: "There's always something to do. There are excellent shopping facilities in Bournemouth and Southampton and a good cinema complex in Poole. The countryside in Dorset is fantastic, as is the seaside. And it's easy to go to London for the day by train."
It's a particularly great place for postgraduates. "The Graduate School is very useful, especially for learning about generic research skills which you can apply in your day-to-day studies. The Research Administrators are also a source of constant support."
As for life after BU, Angela is very positive about her post-doctoral work prospects. She'd like to direct some research projects and hopefully see an increasing amount of her work published. "I'd really like to secure an academic position here at BU," she confesses. "Now I'm here I don't want to leave!"
