Will Haydock

PhD student

Will Haydock was attracted to the University because of a funded studentship, enabling him to study for a PhD in the School of Health & Social Care.

In terms of the academic and financial support I have received, BU has certainly lived up to my expectations. To begin with, I was worried about whether I'd find people with similar interests and how I would find the work, but I couldn't have made a better choice.

Unlike many university towns, Bournemouth isn't too 'studenty', which makes it perfect for postgraduates who want the best of both worlds. Will says: "I've found that students and locals mix well. It's good that not everyone here is a student but there are still chances to meet and socialise with others who go to the University."

BU aims to equip its students with the skills needed for a long and prosperous career, where learning doesn't stop once you graduate. Many of our postgraduates remain in academia once their period of formal study is over, and Will looks set to follow this route: "I've found it interesting to talk to people within the School who have come into academia from different career paths. I believe this offers a unique perspective on academic study and is very different from other universities."

"If the opportunity arose, I would remain in academia but otherwise, I'd like to teach at secondary school level. Having witnessed first-hand how university academics pass on their experience to students, I'd love to do the same!"
